OAMFT and AAMFT Clinical Membership

The Ontario Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (OAMFT) is the Ontario division of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.  The Ontario Association for Marriage and Family Therapists has provided a professional home and governing body for couple and family therapists in the province for more than 30 years.  They are actively engaged in promoting the profession within Ontario and across Canada through the Canadian Registry.  Please contact them for further information regarding association membership, clinical membership guidelines, clinical supervision, or clinical internship programs.

The American Association of Family and Marriage Therapy was founded in 1942, and has 23,000 members worldwide.  The AAMFT is at the forefront of defining and promoting criteria for the education, training and practices of marriage and family therapists.  All decisions about membership eligibility are made by the AAMFT, but as a guide, Clinical Membership requirements stipulate:

  • a Masters degree in a related discipline
  • 11 graduate-level courses in 5 areas (marriage and family; therapy, studies, human development, research and ethics)
  • a 300 hour clinical practicum
  • 1,000 hours of clinical experience
  • 200 hours of clinical supervision
